Dear visitor,
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the listeners to my interview on the BBC Radio 4 Midweek show with Libby Purves on Wednesday 25th February 2006. I am thrilled to announce that the, very long overdue, upgrade to the first of the existing staff accommodation blocks can begin immediately, subject only to a final price for the work being agreed with the contractor.
During the conversation I drew Libby's attention to the fact that some of the existing facilities were so old, dilapidated and the general conditions so dreadful that you wouldn't keep a dog in them. Unfortunately there are perhaps 25 such blocks that house the majority of the nursing staff and within these blocks there are varied numbers of single room accommodations. These single rooms house complete families of up to 5, 6 or even 7 family members. They use shared toilet and washing facilities with all other families within their block.
My intention is to supply each family with a living room, bedroom and a toilet/shower room. The existing buildings, where suitable, will be adapted accordingly and the unsuitable ones will be demolished and new ones built.
Each new block will have its own outside cooking area. As communal cooking is the traditional Gambian way there will be no requirement for individual kitchen areas within the new family units.
Security fencing around the entire accommodation area will be installed. It is very unnerving walking during darkness to the existing accommodation areas and during daytime toddlers can roam far and wide if they are not constantly monitored.
The final building, to complete this mammoth project, will be to build a Community Centre so staff and their families can relax and mix with friends during their free time.
The initial verbal quotation, in January 2006, for this building work varies, subject to the level of new construction work needed. Overall the cost per 'new family unit', where there is a minimum of new construction work needed, will be about £2,500.00 each.
Should you have any imaginative ideas of how I could raise the remaining substantial funds that will be needed to finish this ambitious project I would be thrilled to hear from you. Any ideas or inspirational messages - please email your suggestions.
Alternatively if you would like to nominate this extremely important project to receive a donation please go to the Donate Money page.

The following photos will give you a better understanding of what these dear nurses and their families have endured over the many years. They graphically portray the stark conditions that some people will suffer for the love of their profession.
Kind regards,
Anita Smith
