10 Dollar Club
The following is the email I received from Adam Roberts on the 14th April 2003 that started a chain of events leading to the purchase and shipment of an $800.00 consignment of life saving malnutrition treatments and pharmaceuticals.
Full Name: adam m. roberts
Country: usa
Comments: I may be able to make a donation of about $800 US to your work if you could tell me exactly how such funds would be used. It would have to go for poverty alleviation in some form. In your case, for example, what medical supplies or procedures could be funded with that amount of money. Please advise asap.

Dear Adam,
I have just returned from my latest visit to Bansang and I thought that I would send you some photographs so that you would have an idea how things were going out there. Needless to say the sponsorship boards went out in a container, I didn't cart them there myself!
The photographs show Wopa, our play nurse, Dr Jobarteh, the Chief Executive of the hospital and the Alkali, the head of Bansang Town. Of 120 children on the ward we only managed to find a handful to appear on the photographs, the others were too sick to be disturbed.
I have also enclosed a photograph of the three nurses we employ to work in shifts to ensure that the malnourished children are fed regularly every two hours around the clock. For this we pay them the princely sum of £20 each month.
I can't thank The 10 Dollar Club enough for helping to fund this vital malnutrition programme and also for all the basic pharmaceuticals funded by your generosity.
Yours sincerely,
Anita Smith. Bansang Hospital Appeal.

Kettering the UK
August 9th 2003 at Pink & Jones in Kettering where I store all items in preparation for the loading and shipment of all containers bound for the Gambia. This particular day was an exceptionally hot summer day with temperatures well into the 90's.
Myself, Laura and William with the '10 Dollar Club' consignment just prior to loading.

The Gambia.
River ferry at Bansang. The only link with the north bank of the River Gambia.
The following are a few of the staff members, patients and local people sharing in the pleasure of the arrival of your consignment. CEO of the hospital, Dr Jobarteh on the right. The headmaster of the school in Bansang, on the left. The Alkali, the head man of Bansang in the centre.
A typical view of a ward at Bansang. 3-4 patients share one bed!
The following are two typical patients desperately requiring to be on the
malnutrition programme that your donation is supporting.
This is 'Marasumus' malnutrition.
The above infant with the concerned parents below.
This is 'Kwashikor' malnutrition.
A mother with her malnourished child.
The 10 dollar club also purchased life saving pharmaceuticals.
This infant girl would not have been able to undergo the life saving arm amputation without the essential cannula that is required to introduce intravenous medications and so aid recovery. A cannula costs less than a dollar and yet without it this patient would have died!
The Staff on the Paediatric ward
These three nurses are directly employed by the Bansang Hospital Appeal and their responsibility is the correct implementation of the Malnutrition programme.
The nurse in the pink uniform is Wopa, the Appeals play nurse attendant on the children's ward. Life on the ward before we employed Wopa was an extremely trying time for the patients. Their days were spent laying on their beds with absolutely nothing to occupy their minds whatsoever. With the arrival of Wopa this has all changed and now the children are encouraged to play with toys and interact with one another. It is so rewarding to see these little people enjoying themselves.
Life can be extremely unusual in Africa
How about calling for an ambulance and a horse and cart arrives at your home to speed you off to hospital. Yes, this is the horse drawn ambulance! The horse looks as though it should be on the malnutrition programme too.
To all members of the 10 dollar club. Thanks to you all for your care and concern for these wonderful people in the far away land of Africa. Your generosity is so very much appreciated by staff and patients alike.
Kind regards,
Anita Smith.
